Part of country music’s late-’90s crop of female crossover stars, Jo Dee Messina’s appeal nonetheless remained more with country fans than pop audiences. Messina was born August 25, 1970, in Framingham, MA, and grew up in nearby Holliston. She sang in musical plays starting at age eight but discovered country material at age 12 and got hooked on the likes of the Judds, Reba McEntire, and Dolly Parton. She soon started performing live, and by 16 she was playing local stages with a rhythm section made up of her brother and sister. At age 19, she moved to Nashville in search of greater exposure and sang regularly for prize money in local talent competitions. One win led to a regular gig on the radio show Live at Libby’s, which in turn caught the interest of producer Byron Gallimore, who helped her assemble a demo tape. Gallimore was also working with the young Tim McGraw around the same time, and Messina befriended him. Backstage at one of his concerts, Messina met an executive from his label, Curb, and jokingly suggested that they needed a redhead. Producer James Stroud, who had just heard Messina’s demo, stepped up to vouch for her, and she soon wound up on Curb, with Gallimore and McGraw serving as her producers.

Messina’s self-titled debut album was released in 1996 and gave her two Top Ten smashes in “Heads Carolina, Tails California” (number two) and “You’re Not in Kansas Anymore.” The album sold well, setting the stage for Messina’s star-making sophomore effort, I’m Alright. released in 1998, it made Messina the first female country artist to score three multiple-week number one hits from the same album: “Bye Bye,” “I’m Alright,” and “Stand Beside Her.” She nearly had a fourth, but “Lesson in Leavin'” stalled at number two. Honored by both the CMA and ACM in 1999, Messina staked out even pop-friendlier territory on her third album, 2000’s Burn. It became her first number one album, and the lead single, “That’s the Way,” her fourth number one single. Two more Top Tens followed in “Burn” and “Downtime,” and a fourth single, the Tim McGraw duet “Bring on the Rain,” also topped the charts, helping Burn sell over a million albums. Messina followed it with the holiday record A Joyful Noise in late 2002, and just months later, with only three units to her credit, Curb gave us a Greatest hits compilation. Finally, in 2005, she gave us her official follow-up to Burn, Delicious Surprise.

Jo Dee Messina Performs After Running Marathon

Jo Dee Messina Takes The Stage After Competing In The Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon. Jo Dee Messina had a very busy day yesterday, Sunday, November 11. Not only did she run 13.1 miles, she then performed for 25,000 runners to celebrate the finish of the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon & ½ Marathon. Messina completed the half-marathon in 2:36:50 and took the stage one hour later to headline the event’s finish line concert outside the Alamodome. To the surprise of thousands of runners in the audience, Messina performed wearing her half-marathon finishers medal, CEP compression socks and bright blue running shoes. At the same event on Veterans Day, a solider, Sgt. Jonathan Gillis, having just returned from serving in Iraq for 10 months surprised his wife, Giselle, at the finish line of the race. She had no idea he would be there and broke into tears as she crossed the finish line.

Jo Dee Messina Gives Birth To Her Second Son! Country singer/songwriter, Jo Dee Messina and her husband Chris Deffenbaugh, welcomed their second son to the family yesterday (1-11-12). Jonah Christopher was born at 2:43 PM Central Time weighing 6 pounds and 13 ounces! Noah, Jo Dee’s 3-year-old son now has a little brother to play with! Jo Dee reported from a Nashville hospital that everyone is doing wonderfully. “Noah couldn’t wait to hold his little brother. He’s so good with him. God has blessed us so much!” Congratulations to the entire family!

Jo Dee Messina Launches The Fumbling Mom. Jo Dee Messina is branching out of the area of expertise she is known for, country music, and moving into an area where she maybe does not feel quite like an expert. The mother of one recently announced she is expecting her second child with husband Chris Deffenbaugh, and has decided to share her experiences with motherhood and parenting with the rest of the world. Messina is launching a parenting blog titled, The Fumbling Mom which will debut January of 2012. The content for the blog will focus on Messina’s experiences as a working mother, and she will give insight into her own life while offering tips and pointers to readers. Country music fans can also look forward to a brand new single from Jo Dee which she announced will release sometime early next year.

Jo Dee Messina Plays DC for 4th

Jo Dee Messina Set to Perform in DC for the 4th of July. Washington D.C. is going to be alive and happening with all sorts of events and celebrations for July 4th weekend! Country stars are performing in special concerts all over the nation, and Jo Dee Messina will be featured in a performance right in the heart of the capital! Messina will be performing near the Washington Monument on the WAMO Stage between Madison, Ave & Jefferson, Drive. She is scheduled to be on stage at 8:00pm. For those who will be there earlier, the U.S. Navy Band performs at 6:00 p.m. on the Southwest corner of the grounds of the Washington Monument. No word on whether or not these festivities will be broadcast on television or the web at some point, but maybe you will be able to catch them live! If not, there are sure to be celebrations closer to home country fans can participate in to honor our country’s independence.
