Just when you think you have Zach Bryan‘s next move figured out, the man wanders into a recording studio with Lana Del Rey and then pops up with the Turnpike Troubadours.

At this point, calling it a “rumor” almost undersells what we actually know. Both collaborations have left photographic fingerprints. What we do not know yet is where these songs are going, when we’re going to hear them, or whether Zach Bryan is quietly building something much bigger than the EP he’s already teased.

And frankly, that last possibility is where this gets interesting.

Zach Bryan and Turnpike Troubadours Finally Get in a Room Together

On September 15, Turnpike Troubadours shared photos from a recording session featuring frontman Evan Felker and Zach Bryan. The caption was wonderfully unhelpful: “ZB &; TT,” accompanied by Bryan’s “East Side of Sorrow.” No title. No release date. No explanation. Just enough information to send Red Dirt fans into cardiac arrest.

There is some real history behind that song choice.

Bryan famously celebrated Turnpike’s return in “East Side of Sorrow,” and he’s never exactly hidden his admiration for the Oklahoma band. Turnpike has opened a number of Bryan’s massive shows, Bryan has joined them onstage, and he called them his favorite band in the world when they played Buckeye Country Superfest in 2024.

So seeing Zach Bryan and Evan Felker together in a studio isn’t just another superstar collaboration engineered to make two fanbases hit the same streaming button.

This is the kind of collaboration that makes sense before anybody in a marketing department has to explain why it makes sense.

Bryan’s relationship with Turnpike runs straight through the musical lineage that helped make his own career possible. Turnpike was carrying the Red Dirt and independent country torch long before Zach was filling stadiums, and he has spent years making sure audiences know exactly how much that band means to him.

We’ve been watching this whole independent-country explosion unfold here at CountryMusicNewsBlog.com for long enough to know the difference between a collaboration that looks good on a playlist and one that actually means something to the people making it.

Then There’s Lana Del Rey

And here’s where the plot gets weirder. Or better. Probably both. Just days before the Turnpike studio tease, Lana Del Rey revealed that she and Bryan had completed a song together during a session in Massachusetts. Her September 13 Instagram post included Bryan in the studio and a photo of Lana, Bryan and Lana’s husband Jeremy Dufrene. She wrote that they had “finally got our song done.”

There has been speculation that the song might be called “Whale,” based largely on Lana’s wording and all the whale imagery surrounding the post, but no official song title has been confirmed. More importantly, nobody has confirmed whose project the song belongs to.

That matters because Lana has her own long-awaited project, Stove, on the horizon. She said in July that Stove was intact as intended and also revealed that it has a companion album in the works. Neither project had a confirmed release date at the time.

So the Bryan duet could land with Lana. It could land with Zach. Or we’re all standing outside the kitchen smelling something cooking without knowing whose house we’re at.

Zach Bryan working with Turnpike Troubadours feels inevitable. Zach Bryan working with Lana Del Rey feels unpredictable. Putting those two sessions in the same week makes unpredictable a whole lot more interesting.

And musically? I don’t think Lana and Zach are nearly as strange a pairing as they look on paper.

Both artists have built careers around atmosphere, melancholy, romantic disaster, nostalgia and characters who seem perpetually one bad decision away from becoming a song. The instrumentation may come from different neighborhoods, but emotionally, they’ve been drinking at the same bar for years.

Bryan has even covered Lana’s “Video Games,” so this isn’t some completely random pop-meets-country stunt cooked up overnight.

Lana Del Rey and Zach Bryan don’t need to meet in the middle musically. They already live in neighboring houses on Sad People Street.

Don’t Forget: Zach Bryan Already Has an EP Coming

Bryan has already announced an upcoming EP titled Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs. He revealed the title earlier this summer while posting snippets of unreleased songs “Lodi When” and “Better Friends.”

Reports from his August Salt Lake City show say Bryan told the audience the EP would arrive in October, although there doesn’t appear to be video of that announcement and an official release date still hasn’t been published. So October belongs firmly in the “reported, not confirmed” column for now.

Other unreleased material floating around includes “Walk Backwards,” “Breakfast in Bed,” “Pocket Change” and “You’ll Get By,” although exactly what makes the final EP remains unknown.

There’s another interesting clue too. In a recent episode of Bryan’s Belting Bronco with Jason Isbell, Bryan said he had filmed something for the upcoming EP in Oklahoma that included an interview with his grandmother.

That suggests Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs isn’t just a random collection of songs he had sitting around. There appears to be at least some thought going into the presentation and storytelling surrounding this thing.

Whether Turnpike or Lana appear on that EP is another question entirely. Nobody has confirmed that. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if these were all just false leads and he actually pushes another double-disc 30+ track project our way just to launch another giant sellable catalog. I wouldn’t tattoo the rumored track list on your arm just yet either.

So What Is Zach Bryan Actually Building?

That’s the $350 million-dollar question.

Bryan already released the sprawling With Heaven on Top in January 2026, followed almost immediately by an acoustic version. Now he’s got an announced EP taking shape, a completed Lana Del Rey collaboration sitting somewhere in the universe, and fresh studio photos with Turnpike Troubadours.

That could simply mean Zach Bryan records constantly and we’re trying to assemble a jigsaw puzzle whose pieces were never intended to make one picture. That would certainly be on brand.

But I wouldn’t dismiss the possibility that Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs has grown since Bryan first mentioned it. Zach doesn’t exactly have a reputation for starving his listeners of material. Even observers following the upcoming release have noted that his previously promised EPs haven’t always stayed EP-sized.

The most interesting thing about Zach Bryan right now isn’t how much music he’s making. It’s that the people walking into the room with him suggest he’s thinking in several musical directions at once.

Turnpike represents roots, Red Dirt, Oklahoma and the musical world Bryan came from, while Lana represents atmosphere, experimentation and a songwriting sensibility that can turn loneliness into something almost cinematic. Zach sits pretty comfortably between those poles.

And before somebody starts yelling about whether Lana Del Rey is “country,” I truly do not have the energy to rebuild that fence again. Country music has spent the last several years proving that listeners don’t particularly care where the industry draws its genre borders when the song is good enough.

WhiskeyChick’s Take:

The Turnpike collaboration is the one I’m most excited to hear because it falls in my wheelhouse.

There are collaborations designed to surprise people, collaborations designed to expand audiences, and collaborations that happen because musicians have been circling each other’s work for years. Zach Bryan and Turnpike Troubadours belong firmly in that third category.

Give me Evan Felker and Zach Bryan swapping verses over something ragged, literate and unmistakably Oklahoma and I’m listening before you’ve finished uploading it.

But Lana is the wildcard, and wildcards are… interesting. In fact, anything to do with Lana’s choices seems interesting in recent years.

If Bryan is using these sessions to stretch beyond the sound people expect from him, good. He’s reached the point in his career where repeating the formula would probably be the safest possible decision, which is exactly why I’d rather watch him make the unsafe one.

For now, here’s what we can actually say: Zach Bryan has an EP called Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs on the way, with October widely reported but not officially locked down. Lana Del Rey says their collaboration is finished. Turnpike Troubadours have put Zach Bryan in the studio with Evan Felker and teased the meeting publicly. Nobody has confirmed that either collaboration belongs to Zach’s EP.

Everything beyond that is speculation.

So now I want to hear from you: If you only get one first, are you taking Zach Bryan with Turnpike Troubadours, or Zach Bryan with Lana Del Rey?
