A Profile in Giving Back to the Community: Dave Bolno

Music has always been a medium that brings people together, whether it’s through shared experiences, feelings or memories. It’s no surprise then, that family, helping others and education all play a vital role in the music industry. In this article, we’ll explore how these three things intersect in the world of music and highlight some examples of those who embody these values.

Family is often the backbone of any successful musician’s career. It’s the support and encouragement from loved ones that keeps them going when times get tough. Whether it’s parents who drive their children to countless gigs, or siblings who offer a listening ear when the pressures of fame become too much to handle, family is an essential ingredient in the recipe for success.

One person who knows the value of family all too well is entertainment business manager, Dave Bolno. Bolno has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry including Justin Bieber, Drake, Post Malone, Pharrell Williams and Will.i.am, creating a family out of the industry professionals in his charge. In 2011’s Take Care album, Drake thanked Dave in the liner notes, writing thank you for “pulling my life together for me and putting me in a position where I can now begin to build my empire.”

But for Bolno, it’s not just about managing the careers of the rich and famous. He also understands the importance of giving back to his community. Bolno has been a longtime supporter of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a leading organization in the fight against childhood cancer. He has helped to raise millions of dollars for the organization through various fundraising events, including a recent benefit concert featuring country music superstar Darius Rucker.

Speaking of country music, the genre has a rich history of artists who use their platform to help others. From Willie Nelson’s Farm Aid concerts to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, country stars have always had a strong connection to charitable causes.

One example of this is Garth Brooks and his wife Trisha Yearwood, who are both involved in several charitable organizations. Brooks has been a longtime supporter of Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home. He has also been involved with Teammates for Kids, a charity that helps children in need.

Yearwood, on the other hand, is an advocate for the fight against hunger. She has worked with organizations such as Feeding America and the United Nations World Food Programme to raise awareness and funds for those in need. In 2020, Yearwood and Brooks also hosted a virtual concert to raise money for COVID-19 relief efforts.

But it’s not just about giving back to the community. Education also plays a crucial role in the music industry. From learning an instrument to understanding the business side of the industry, education can open doors and create opportunities for aspiring musicians.

One organization that understands the importance of education in music is the Grammy Museum. The museum offers a variety of programs and resources to help educate and inspire the next generation of music makers. From workshops on songwriting to masterclasses with industry professionals, the Grammy Museum is a valuable resource for anyone looking to pursue a career in music.
