A contemporary folkie renowned for her expressive, crystalline voice, singer/songwriter Jewel was among the most popular female artists to dominate the pop charts throughout the 1990s. Born Jewel Kilcher on May 23, 1974, in Payson, UT, she was raised in remote Homer, AK, and began her music career at the age of six, regularly performing alongside her singer/songwriter parents in local Eskimo villages and tourist attractions. After her parents’ divorce, she remained with her father, hosting shows with him for the next seven years.

While attending Michigan’s Interlochen Fine Arts Academy, Jewel started writing her first material; upon graduating, she joined her mother in San Diego, suffering through a series of short-lived day jobs before deciding to flee the nine-to-five world for good, at which time she moved into her van and started focusing on a career in material. Her first regular gig was at the Innerchange, a coffeehouse in Pacific Beach; word rapidly spread, and by 1993 she was the subject of a rabid local cult following.

After signing to Atlantic, Jewel issued her debut LP, Pieces of You, in early 1995. The album was a slow starter, not even breaking into the Billboard pop charts until some 14 months after its release; however, the single “Who Will Save Your Soul” eventually became a major hit, and soon the record was a best-seller as well. Two other high-charting singles, “You Were Meant for Me” and “Foolish Games,” came. Pieces of You eventually sold more than 12 million copies, making it one of the highest-selling debut albums of all time. Jewel responded to such unexpected success by releasing 1998’s Night Without Armor, a collection of her own spoken word poetry, before unveiling her hotly anticipated second album, Spirit. The record yielded another Top Ten hit, “Hands,” and enjoyed multi-platinum sales. A seasonal album entitled Joy: A Holiday Collection came in late 1999, at a time of Chasing Down the Dawn — a spoken word record featuring unabridged selections from the book of the same name — was put forth in fall 2000.

This Way appeared one year later and featured such standout singles as “Standing Still\;” it also hinted at Jewel’s growing fondness for dance music, as a remixed version of “Serve the Ego” wound up topping the American dance/club charts in 2002. Even so, fans and critics were shocked when the singer’s next release, 0304, turned out to be a slick dance-pop album. Just as unexpected was Jewel’s decision to allow the Schick company to use her album’s hit single, “Intuition,” for an advertising campaign introducing a new razor. Her new image didn’t last long, however, and Goodbye Alice in Wonderland — released in May 2006 — marked a return to the warm sound of the singer’s earlier work. Although it debuted in the Billboard Top Ten, the record failed to go platinum and marked the end of Jewel’s association with Atlantic Records. Working with producer John Rich of Big & Rich, Jewel subsequently refashioned herself as a country vocalist for 2008’s Perfectly Clear, which debuted atop the country units charts.

Jewel Lands Role As June Carter Cash

Jewel To Play June Carter Cash In Upcoming Lifetime Movie! Singer Jewel has landed the role of June Carter Cash in the upcoming Lifetime original movie, The June Carter Cash Story. The story is based off of a memoir titled Anchored in Love: An Intimate Portrait of June Carter Cash written by John Carter Cash, the son of Carter and Johnny (which notably included a forward by Robert Duvall!). The movie will track June’s life from her roots in rural Virginia to her professional success, and of course includes details on her personal life including her three marriages. The film is slated for release this year with no definite date specified so far! Will you watch?

Jewel Unharmed By Collision with Fire Truck

Jewel Safe After Car Accident Jewel, who is pregnant with her first child with rodeo champion husband Ty Murray, is safe and sound after being involved in a wreck with a fire truck Friday in Texas. The fire truck was responding to a grass fire when it collided with the passenger side of Jewel’s SUV. Jewel went to the hospital immediately after the accident to confirm that she and her baby were fine, and tests confirmed, happily, that they were. Since the unfortunate accident, Jewel has kept fans up to date with regular tweets on her condition. “Dr said no working out, so I’m just going to take it easy…just a little sore and banged up – but feeling so blessed this morning.” -Jewel Jewel announced her pregnancy is January, and confirmed that she and her husband are expecting a baby boy. After a few years of trying, Jewel and bullrider husband Ty Murray have announced that they are expecting their first child late this spring! No word yet on whether they’re buying pink or blue nursery accessories, but they are working on their Texas ranch to make it more baby-friendly. Congratulations to the beautiful couple.

Jewel’s Stalker Heads to the Slammer

A man accused of stalking country crossover Jewel has been arrested. The TENNESSEAN reports that, a man accused of stalking VALORY MUSIC Co. artist JEWEL was arrested last week when he went two consecutive days to the 2,000-acre rural TEXAS ranch owned by JEWEL’s husband, rodeo champion TY MURRAY. MICHAEL LAWRANCE KOZELKA was found on the ranch SEPTEMBER 14th and warned not to return. On SEPTEMBER 15th KOZELKA was found at the house with a pocket knife and a dog with him. ERATH COUNTY Sheriff TOMMY BRYANT said he did not resist arrest. “He was not aggressive and was not mad,” BRYANT told THE ASSOCIATED PRESS on TUESDAY. “He just said he was on a mission from GOD, that GOD told him to come to STEPHENVILLE and led him to this ranch.” BRYANT declined to say anything further about what KOZELKA may have said about JEWEL or MURRAY. KOZELKA was charged with stalking and has been jailed in STEPHENVILLE, about 75 miles southwest of FORT WORTH, on $30,000 bond. Jewel Signs with New Nashville Label Valory

Scott Borchetta, the president and CEO for Big Machine Records, is launching a second imprint, the Valory Music Company, and has signed Jewel to a multi-album deal, billboard.com reports.“She’s just one of the best singer/songwriters in any genre,” Scott says, adding that a move to country is “a natural progression for her.” The label’s name is a variation on June Carter Cash‘s birth name, Valerie June Carter. According to Scott, the name means “fierce; the brave one; of valor.” Along with Jewel, whose album was produced by Big & Rich‘s John Rich and is expected in the spring, Valory will be home to Justin Moore and Jimmy Wayne. Justin has been in development, and Jimmy moves over from the Big Machine roster, which includes Taylor Swift, Trisha Yearwood and Jack Ingram, among others. It also handles promotion for Garth Brooks. Jewel, who has cut five of her six albums in Nashville, says country has always been in her plans. “I’ve been wanting to do this record my whole career,” she says, “but my label was always scared of country music. I’ve always had country songs on my records. If I had been discovered now, living in my car in San Diego, I think I would have been signed as a country act.” Earlier this year Jewel hosted the country reality show Nashville Star and she has made a number of appearances at Muzik Mafia events. She co-wrote and dueted with new artist Jason Michael Carroll on “No Good In Goodbye,” which appears on his debut album, Waitin’ in the Country.
