Oklahoma singer-songwriter J.D. Graham, known to many of us as just Jeremy, is fighting through devastating injuries after being hit by a semi on the interstate in New Mexico on February 24.
According to updates shared by his daughter and family, Jeremy was struck by a tractor trailer and pushed into another semi. He was airlifted from the scene and admitted to the ICU. On site, he could not move his limbs. Later, doctors confirmed he could move all four, which was a hopeful early sign. He remains disoriented and facing extensive injuries including a broken back, broken neck, and broken ribs.
This is life-altering.
Those of us who have followed JD’s career know how hard he’s worked to build it the right way. He’s toured relentlessly. He’s written songs that dig into struggle and redemption. He’s carried his family through his wife Amy’s cancer treatment while continuing to chase the music dream that so many talk about and so few endure.
Now he needs that same endurance from us.
In a short video posted from his hospital bed, clearly in pain but still himself, JD told fans:
“I’m barely alive here. Thank you, guys, I’m still discombobulated but my daughter said that people are helping me out with some things … broken back, broken ribs, broken heart.”
He also shared that his dog died in the accident.
There are no words for that kind of loss layered on top of trauma.
Peers across the Red Dirt and independent country world have already begun rallying. Galleywinter, Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers, and others have publicly shown support. That’s what this community does. We take care of our own.
From Galleywinter: “If you know J.D., you know his heart. You know the grit in his voice. He’s one of our greatest songwriters with quite the testimony. You know the honesty in his songs. He’s poured himself into music and into people in a way that only someone with his second chance at life can.
Let’s pour some back into him.
Lift up J.D. Graham tonight. Lift up his family. Pray for strength as this moves along.
If you’ve ever seen him in a small Oklahoma venue. If you’ve ever blasted one of his songs down a backroad. If you believe that independent artists deserve the same safety net that major-label acts take for granted, now is the time to act.
How to Help:
A GoFundMe has been set up to help Jeremy and his family as they face what will be a long and expensive recovery:
If you can donate, please do. If you cannot, share the link. Keep his name in your prayers. Keep his family lifted up.
This scene was built on more than music. It was built on loyalty, grit, and community.
Let’s show JD Graham that Oklahoma stands behind him.
