Too Country for Rock or Too Rock for Country Music?

Jim Nash V is back as a guest writer, exploring the border-pushing definition of country music. In a follow-up to my article from last week, “Country Music on iTunes”, I’ve decided to explore some of these categories a bit more. The Country Pop Rock category can be a pretty large umbrella. When I think of Country Rock, I think of songs that rely more on a heavier guitar sound that drives the song. One of the earliest examples I can think of would be Garth’s Ain’t Going Down ( Ti’l the Sun Comes Up). The guitar parts are full-steam ahead, in your face rock-n-roll style (not unlike his concerts) and include traditional guitar “riffs or hooks”. Without Garth’s vocals, this could easily be a classic rock song. (Remember his duet with Huey Lewis on Working for a Living a few years ago? Not a big stretch.) Now fast forward to modern day and you have artists pushing that heavy guitar sound even further. Most notably Big & Rich, Carrie Underwood (before you disagree, how about Last Name?), Rascal Flatts (Life is a Highway), Randy Houser, Trace Adkins and Jason Aldean. Even Keith Urban, who’s early music with the Ranch is much more Country sounding than his stuff today. These artists are using multiple distorted guitar tracks, using the “wah” effect, detuning their guitars to give them a deeper, more ominous sound and are writing guitar hooks and solos into their songs that sound nothing like Country. Jason Aldean’s She’s Country stands out as a song that, without the obligatory fiddle parts and the title, could easily pass as a Nickelback or Soundgarden track. So when does a song become too Rock for Country? And if fiddle, pedal steel or banjo is added to a “heavy” country song and the singer comes from South of the Mason / Dixon line, is that enough to keep it Country? Is this what Country music has to do to build the younger generation fan base so that the overall genre lives on? Is the umbrella too large though or do we need yet more categories like Country Modern Rock? Country Alternative Rock? Country Metal? Keep it Country, Jim Nash V. Jason Aldean:The Truth

Jason Aldean celebrates with Music Row his latest number 1, “The Truth.” Jason Aldean‘s latest NO. 1 single,” The Truth,” co-written by Ashley Monroe was celebrated on Monday at BMI headquarters in Nashville.  Arriving in his usual checkered shirt, worn-out looking jeans, and a baseball cap Aldean helped celebrate the success of Monroe’s first chart-topper.Jason first heard the demo of “The Truth” in his car, and decided immediately that he wanted to record it. “From day one,” Aldean said, “it was my favorite song on the record.” Monroe began her musical career at Dollywood Theme Park singing five times a week. After recording an album that never got released due to label changes, Monroe decided to focus on her song writing skills. Ree Guyer Buchanan’s publishing company signed Monroe at the age of 17. Monroe thanked her mother and several others for assisting her to getting to this point. “Jason, it still gives me a chill. Sometimes I forget I wrote it, and I just sing along.” Monroe said. Kudos to Jason and Ashley.Country Music Photo Gallery

Jason Aldean: Wide Open Live & More

Jason Aldean’s DVD Wide Open Live & More is received well by fans and critics nationwide! Backing up and supporting his Gold-certified CD Wide Open, Jason Aldean’s Wide Open Live & More DVD offers to deliver more of this rising star! Released August 25, this DVD showcases his energetic blend of country and southern rock, which is positively blazing when performed live! Now I’ve gotten a good look and listen at this DVD and overall I have to say it’s not bad at all for his first. You catch the energy and excitement of the live show, and the setlist is well-thought out, keeping the momentum up throughout the performance. If I could change any one thing it would be the audio quality of Jason’s vocals. It would seem that either the mic he’s using or the settings on the board have his vocals falling a little flat (i.e. dynamic-wise, NOT pitch-wise). This is a common issue with live performance DVD’s though, especially debuts. For Jason Aldean fans I think they would LOVE this DVD, and I look forward to seeing his next one whenever that may be. ~WC~ Watch more AOL Music videos on AOL Video Country Music Photo Gallery
