<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sammy Kershaw says this year’s <a title="CMA Awards" href="https://countrymusicontour.com/cma-awards-tickets-pre-sale-starts-now/">CMA Awards</a> have left him hurt, embarrassed and pushed aside. In a public post, the country veteran says the CMA denied his request to walk the red carpet for a few minutes with his wife, Mendy, after they had rearranged his touring schedule and booked travel around the event.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kershaw points to a career that stretches more than 50 years, more than two dozen Billboard-charting hits, a CMA Horizon Award nomination, his lifetime CMA membership, and years of appearances at <a title="CMA Fest" href="https://countrymusicontour.com/2024-cma-fest-lineup/">CMA Fest</a>. He says he hoped he had earned the chance to walk the carpet alongside his wife, as they have before. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That account matters on its own. The red carpet is a short window, but it is also one of the most visible ways an awards show tells the world who belongs in the room. When an artist says he was kept out of that window after months of planning, the decision can feel like more than a scheduling call. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The timing makes the question harder to shrug off. The 60th <a title="CMA Awards" href="https://countrymusicontour.com/cma-awards-tickets-pre-sale-starts-now/">CMA Awards</a> are set for November 18, a milestone year the association says will celebrate the artists and industry figures who shaped country music. Its first announced performers include <a title="Miranda Lambert" href="https://stubhub.prf.hn/click/camref:1100ljXyr/pubref:WPSMLambert/ar:CMNBAutoLink/destination:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.stubhub.com%2Fmiranda-lambert-tickets%2F">Miranda Lambert</a> and <a title="Kacey Musgraves" href="https://stubhub.prf.hn/click/camref:1100ljXyr/pubref:WPSMusgraves/ar:CMNBAutoLink/destination:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.stubhub.com%2Fkacey-musgraves-tickets%2F">Kacey Musgraves</a>, both among this year’s nominees, along with other current nominees and a Dolly Parton tribute. <a href="https://cmaawards.com/news/cma-announces-first-round-of-performers-for-the-60th-annual-cma-awards/">The CMA’s announcement is here.</a></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kershaw remains active on the road, including with the Roots &; Boots tour. I could not find a newly announced album campaign timed to the awards, though the absence of a public announcement does not prove no project is in progress. That may be relevant to how an event weighs its limited promotional space, but it does not tell us why his request was denied. As of Friday morning, the CMA had not publicly explained its decision in the reporting available.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I asked <a href="https://whiskeychick.rocks/branded/">country music journalist Shauna “WhiskeyChick” Castorena</a> why she thinks Kershaw may not have been prioritized for the carpet. She sees a tension between honoring the artists who built the genre and using the carpet to promote what is most timely for the broadcast.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Unfortunately, what I think happened is that the CMA has to balance honoring legacy artists with promoting whatever is most timely for the broadcast. The red carpet is essentially a press junket. It’s designed to get fans excited about what’s happening right now and give them something they can act on immediately. In that environment, legacy alone doesn’t guarantee placement, even if fans feel it should.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That is a plausible explanation for the way a red carpet can be managed, but it remains an interpretation. Neither Kershaw’s post nor the CMA’s public materials explain the criteria used for his request. The available reporting is about his red-carpet access; it does not establish that he was barred from attending the awards ceremony itself. <a href="https://www.knoe.com/2026/11/06/it-really-hurts-me-louisiana-native-country-music-star-sammy-kershaw-says-cma-denied-red-carpet-request-two-weeks-before-show/">KALB’s report on Kershaw’s statement</a> says the CMA had not yet responded.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">WhiskeyChick also believes Kershaw’s decision to speak publicly exposes a bigger divide in the way the industry measures value.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Do I believe Sammy Kershaw is a legacy artist who deserves recognition? Absolutely. Do I also believe that in an era where every second of press attention is monetized and measured through analytics, his experience highlights the difference between influence and influencers? Yes. Some people on that carpet will be there because they bring social reach or sponsorships, not because of long-term contribution, and some of those spots could, and should, be better used to honor a legacy artist like him. Brand alignment isn’t only about revenue potential; it also signals whether the organization still stands by what earned it an audience in the first place. When legacy artists want to be included but get pushed behind what’s trending, that’s a missed opportunity. I think the CMA&#8217;s got this one all wrong.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is nothing wrong with giving the carpet to artists who are making news right now. They help sell the broadcast, draw viewers and give fans something current to follow. But a 60th anniversary, especially one rumored to center on 90&#8217;s country, is also a chance to show that country music remembers the artists whose songs helped build the audience the industry is still trying to reach.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To add insult to injury, i<a href="https://countryrebel.com/sammy-kershaw-cma-awards-red-carpet/">n a statement to Country Rebel</a>, Kershaw’s manager shared more details about the CMA’s decision and revealed that Sammy is not planning to attend the awards ceremony. The statement read:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Sammy was denied red carpet access because they received an overwhelming number of artist requests for the red carpet and awards show. He didn’t meet their updated criteria, BUT he could purchase tickets for the <a title="CMA Awards" href="https://countrymusicontour.com/cma-awards-tickets-pre-sale-starts-now/">CMA Awards</a>. However, they couldn’t guarantee that he and his wife would be seated with the other artists if he purchased the tickets, which are roughly $800+ apiece. As of right now, Sammy is now not planning to attend.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kershaw says he wanted a few minutes on the carpet with his wife. The CMA may have had a reason for saying no, but it has not made that reason public. Until it does, fans are left to judge the decision by what it communicates: whether legacy still earns a place in the picture, or whether the most measurable value is the only value that counts.</p>
