Contemporary country vocalist Martina McBride rose to stardom in the late ’90s, starting out with a more traditionalist approach and later moving into pop-friendlier territory. She was born Martina Mariea Schiff in Medicine Lodge, KS, in 1966 and discovered country songs through her father, who led a local band called the Schifters. By her teen years, she was singing and performing keyboards with the Schifters, and after high school she gigged around Kansas with several different bands. She married soundman John McBride, and in 1990 the couple moved to Nashville, where John worked for performers like Charlie Daniels and Ricky Van Shelton; Martina, meanwhile, worked as a demo singer, and her husband produced her demo tape, which got her signed to RCA in 1991. Around the same time, John was hired as Garth Brooks’ production manager, which helped land Martina an opening slot on tour with Brooks. Her debut album, The Time Has Come, was issued in 1992, offering a set of material indebted to traditional honky tonk and progressive-minded country-folk. The pop-inflected 1993 follow-up, The Way That I Am, was her commercial breakthrough, with the lead single “My Baby Loves Me” zooming up the country charts to the number two position. The affecting story-song “Independence Day” became something of a signature number, and another single, “Life #9,” also reached the Top Ten.

McBride’s 1995 follow-up, Wild Angels, gave her a second Top Five hit in “Safe in the Arms of Love,” and its title track became her first-ever number one single. issued in 1997, Evolution became her first Top Ten country album, and the Jim Brickman duet “Valentine” not only went Top Ten, but crossed over to become her first big hit on the adult contemporary charts. Evolution went on to spawn two number two favorites (“Happy Girl” and “Whatever You Say”) and two number one favorites (“A Broken Wing” and “Wrong Again”), and sold over two million copies, launching McBride into the top rank of country stardom. She issued a Christmas album in late 1998 and came back with a proper follow-up, Emotion, in 1999. Its lead single, “I Love You,” hit number one country and also crossed over to adult contemporary radio, and the follow-ups “Love’s the Only House,” “There You Are,” and “It’s My Time” were all successful as well (the first two also reached the Top Ten). The Greatest smashes compilation gave us in 2001 was the first McBride album to top the country charts, and sold well enough to make the pop Top Five as well. It contained four new tracks, all of which were eventually issued as singles; “Blessed” hit number one, and “When God-Fearin’ Women Get the Blues” and “Where Would You Be” both reached the Top Ten. Martina from 2003 celebrated womanhood, at a time of Timeless from 2005 was a collection of country classics; both became Top Ten album hits, the latter climbing to number three. Waking Up Laughing appeared in 2007 from RCA Records. The CD/DVD set Live in Concert was put forth in 2008, followed by Shine in 2009 from RCA.

He is also one of the most successful live concert performers in the world.   In 1985, Mellencamp, together with Willie Nelson and Neil Young, created Farm Aid. The social activism reflected in his songs helped catalyze Farm Aid, the concert series and organization that has addressed the struggle of American family farmers for more than 25 years. John also wrote the title song for the upcoming film, The Yellow Birds, an American war film directed by Alexandre Moors and based on the novel The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers. The film stars Tye Sheridan, Jack Huston, Alden Ehrenreich, Jennifer Aniston, and Toni Collette.  John continues to focus on another facet of his artistic expression: painting. His style has progressed over the years as evidenced by several gallery shows and published portfolios, and in recent years he has increased his output by completing over 100 new works. His pieces were shown in 2012 at the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville under the title “Nothing Like I Planned: The Art Of John Mellencamp” and, more recently at the Butler Institute of American Art in an exhibition entitled “The Paintings Of John Mellencamp.”  “The Paintings of John Mellencamp” traveled to the Museum of Art-DeLand, Florida and John’s art was showcased at the ACA Gallery in New York. Martina McBride’s Joy Of Christmas Tour

Martina McBride Hits The Road For A 16-City Christmas Tour. Martina McBride’s favorite time of year is Christmas, so this year she is doing it up big in more way than one! She will be sharing this magical time of the year with fans as she makes appearances in two TV specials, premiers a new music video, lends her voice to the Very Special Christmas album and performs on her 16-city The Joy of Christmas Tour. The tour kicked off this past Friday in Atlanta, GA and will hit cities in Virginia, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Missouri and more! The final show will be December 21 in Chicago, IL. McBride will be backed by a 12 piece band, including a string section, to help blow the audiences socks off! There will be a duet with “The King,” local celebs reciting “The Grinch,” and a home video of the McBride’s on Christmas morning. “My goal is to put everyone in the Christmas spirit by bringing every aspect of Christmas to life on stage,” said McBride during her tour rehearsal. “We perform everything from pop classics like ‘Let it Snow’ and ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas’ to the beautiful hymns such as ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’ and ‘O Holy Night.’ One of the parts I’m most looking forward to is when I go into the audience to chat with fans. It’s spontaneous and fun, because you never know what’s going to happen! I love Christmas, and I’ve put together a show that is powerful and full of emotion, as well as fun for the whole family. The Shalom Foundation’s Hymns, Hams & Jams Concert Was A Success! Last week, Martina McBride shared her time and musical talents at Nashville’s Hymns, Hams & Jams concert from Loveless Barn in support of The Shalom Foundation. The event was a huge success, raising much-needed funds in support of its medical program in Guatemala. The August 21 Hymns, Hams & Jams concert, headlined by Martina McBride, also featured a performance and live auction with legendary songwriter Bob DiPiero. GAC and Sirius XM personality Storme Warren hosted the event. Auction items included tickets to the 2012 World Series, Nashville Predators VIP packages, Peter Nappi custom footwear, a private bus party, exclusive concert tickets and backstage experiences with artists including Brad Paisley and The Band Perry and a unique eat-and-greet experience with Zac Brown Band, all bringing in donations for the Christian organization and its work in Guatemala. The Shalom Foundation recently brought 14-year old Angelica Morales to Vanderbilt’s Monroe Carrell Jr. Children’s Hospital to complete surgery on a complicated vascular malformation, which required more resources than were currently available at its Moore Pediatric Surgery Center in Guatemala City. A pediatric dental surgery team recently returned from The Moore Pediatric Surgery Center in Guatemala City, led by doctors and nurses from the Nashville area including Dr. George Adams, Dr. George Fiaz and Dr. Shannon Hershey. Proceeds from this month’s Hymns Hams & Jams will directly support The Shalom Foundation’s medical program.
