Dixie Chicks: The Controversy Country Music Won’t Let Die

The Dixie Chicks “Thing” Happened Years Ago, Can We Let It Go Now? Recently, I found an article from Country Weekly that surprised me. It was a short article about some comments Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks made on her twitter account during the 2012 Grammy Awards. Apparently, she made an off-hand comment about Jason Aldean being out of tune during his performance of “Don’t You Wanna Stay” with Kelly Clarkson. The title of this article was, “Natalie Maines’ Own Fans Don’t Like Her Jason Aldean Dig,” and the opening statement of the article was this: The Dixie Chicks’ Natalie Maines is no stranger to saying controversial things. Remember a certain overseas criticism of then-President Bush that effectively destroyed the Chicks’ country career? First of all, saying that someone is out of tune during a performance is not controversial in the least (Or it really shouldn’t be, and if it is somehow, we might be in trouble as an industry). To me, Maines’ comments just show observational skills. I love both Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson, but their 2012 Grammy performance was not their best. I’ve seen them perform this before, and they totally rocked it. So maybe they just had an off night, or the sound crew wasn’t handling the levels well. Who knows? Regardless, Maines wasn’t necessarily wrong, and she definitely wasn’t being “mean”. Here is my big issue though: are we seriously still talking about that? Almost ten years later, really is this the first thing we have to say about Natalie Maines? This is why we write an article about her? Really? Just a quick refresher, the Dixie Chicks have earned CMA Awards as Entertainer of the Year (2001), for Vocal Group of the Year (1998, 1999, 2000, 2002), for Song of the Year (1999), for Album of the Year (2000), for Video of the Year (1998, 1999), and for the Horizon Award (1998). They have also earned multiple Grammy Awards, hold the distinction of being the top selling female group of any genre, and have 6 #1 country music singles (those were within a 5 year period). Not to mention, these 3 extraordinarily talented and hard-working women gave country fans some really amazing music that will stand the test of time. That is their legacy. It is alarming to me that it is okay to disregard an opinion or vilify someone because they say something negative about something you like. Sometimes people can do this in a non-constructive way, I’ll give you that. Still though, everyone is entitled to their negative opinions just as much as others are to their positive ones. We run the danger of losing our critical thinking skills when we only listen to the “good stuff” people say; the things that let us stay safely inside our comfort zones. Let me be clear, Jason Aldean is a great performer, and being out of tune during one performance in no way discounts that. At the end of the day, I really Continue reading Dixie Chicks: The Controversy Country Music Won’t Let Die

Miranda Lambert Over You Music Video

Here Is The Official Music Video For Miranda Lambert’s Latest Single, “Over You!” The Lambert/Shelton families have dealt with a lot of loss over the last few months and it comes as a coincidence that “Over You” was released when it was. Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton co-wrote the emotional song, which is about the passing of Shelton’s older brother Richie. Shelton has said many times that he could have never recorded it himself because of the pain it would cause him to sing it on stage every night. The song is very powerful and every time I hear it, it strikes an emotional chord with me (that’s the thing about country lyrics, so many people can relate in their own way). The first time I saw the video I had full on goosebumps! From the back-story of the song to the cemetery setting…this is definitely a video you have to see! So here it is, grab some tissues and watch! “Over You” can be found on Lambert’s album Four The Record.

Lady Antebellum Dancin’ Away With My Heart Video

Lady Antebellum New Video for Single Dancin’ Away With My Heart. Lady Antebellum‘s have released a video for their nostalgic single “Dancin’ Away With My Heart“. For the most part, this video is really simple. It mostly just utilizes footage of the trio performing the song at concerts with a little backstage footage mixed in. I think fans will definitely get a kick out of the video’s open though. Each of the Lady A’s members shares a memory of their first dance and which song they were dancin’ to! Its fun to get this little bit of insight into the band and where they get the inspiration for their music! Check out the video below! When was your first dance? What song did you dance to? JT Hodges, New Artist on the Country Scene

CMNB Would Like You to Meet JT Hodges! I recently had the chance to chat with this ACM New Artist nominee (He was in the group of finalists, but didn’t make the final three. He said it was great just to be considered at all though!) So, let me tell you, this guy is about as down-to-earth as they come! With deep roots in the music business, JT Hodges is a legitimate artist with some serious musical chops! Growing up in Fort Worth, TX helping out at his Dad’s studio, he was exposed to a range of music at a young age, and this influence is evident in the depth and quality of his own music. You may have heard his debut single, “Hunt You Down” which hit airwaves summer of 2011, or perhaps, you checked out single #2 that released just a week or so ago, “Goodbyes Made You Mine“. (If you haven’t taken a listen to these tunes yet, I suggest you make that happen!). In these songs you will hear a genuine, honest voice with just the right mixture of classic country and a bit of a rock edge. Hodges says that the rock element is definitely there in his music, but he gravitates towards country music because he likes songs that have something to say and that’s what country offers. These two singles will be featured on his debut (most likely self-titled) album which is tentatively slated for a Summer 2012 release. Hodges told me that the album is representative of his journey up to this point with inspiration for various tracks ranging from things that happened from six months to ten years ago! He also said that there’s just a little somethin’ on the album for everyone, no matter what you like! So, keep your ears open for JT’s album this summer, and in the mean time, check out his two singles! I’ll give you a head start and include one of his videos below (Bonus points if you can tell me where it was shot…just by watching)! JT Hodges “Hunt You Down” Video. Luke Bryan Sings Adele’s “Someone Like You”

Luke Bryan Shares Rendition of “Someone Like You” with Fans at Concert. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: One of the best things about Luke Bryan is that this man knows how to put on a good show. He interacts with his fans, he gets a little crazy, and he isn’t afraid to step outside of the box! Most recently, he shared his rendition of Adele‘s popular single “Someone Like You” in his performance on tour with Jason Aldean in Nashville. Bryan doesn’t really hit all the high notes like Adele can, but there’s something simultaneously cute and sexy about him singing along with his baseball cap and jeans to this particular song. Oh, and did I mention that he is playing the piano (he says he sucks at it, but I’m not buying it)…I mean, does anyone else think that’s hot? Check it out below! Luke Bryan Sings “Someone Like You”. George Strait Cancels Concert

George Strait Canceled Saturday Concert at Last Minute. George Strait canceled his Saturday, February 25th concert at literally the last minute. The performance in Kansas City was part of a brief tour with Martina McBride, and Strait canceled his part of the gig after McBride’s hour-long opening set. Reportedly, he came out on stage, sang one song from his latest album, Here for a Good Time, then had to call it quits when his voice became hoarse. This was the last stop of the short tour, but George (presumably along with Martina) will make-up the concert on March 3rd at the Sprint Center. We sure do hope he’s doing alright!

Hank Williams Jr. Taking Back The Country Tour

Hank Williams Jr. Is Hitting The Road With His “Taking Back The Country Tour!” Hank Williams Jr. will be making a multi-city tour, “Taking Back The Country,” that will kick off March 3! With 16 dates and more to be added, Bocephus himself will be spreading his love of the music to old and new fans alike! Jamey Johnson, Chris Young, Josh Thompson, George Thorogood and 38 Special will join Williams on select dates. The first show will take place in St. Augustine, FL at The St. Augustine Amphitheatre. Williams has a new album for everyone to look forward to that will include material written within weeks of his 2011 controversial remarks. These new songs along with his classics “A Country Boy Can Survive” and “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight,” plus many more will make this a show fans will never forget!
