CMT Music Awards 2012 Hosts

Toby Keith and Kristen Bell Host 2012 CMT Music Awards. Well, it looks like Toby Keith has been tapped for host of the 2012 CMT Music Awards! That makes complete and total sense, especially with the wild popularity of his crowd favorite “Red Solo Cup” still going strong! What makes less sense is his co-host, Kristen Bell. Bell is a talented and funny actress…but she has no connection to country music…what so ever. So, not entirely sure how she was chosen. “Toby Keith and Kristen Bell are a terrific one-two knockout punch for the 2012 CMT Music Awards…Toby has been involved with our show every year since its inception and Kristen is as entertaining and witty as any young actor working today. We’re thrilled to have them both as hosts for this year’s show.” -John Hamlin, SVP, Music Events and Talent, CMT So, that statement isn’t super helpful in trying to figure out the reasoning behind their choices, but figured I’d give it to you anyway. I’m not too worried though. The show already has a pretty great performance line-up, and no doubt Keith will do what he can to keep things good and country. This is a fan voted show, and the voting is open NOW…through June 4th. You can vote online at CMT.com, and you can get fancy on your mobile device and vote with CMT Mobile or the CMT Insider app available on iPhone, iPad and Android. The five finalists for Video of the Year will be announced at the beginning of the show and you will be able to vote at CMT.com, CMT mobile, on the CMT Insider app and via text message throughout the live telecast (ET/CT only) to determine winner. The 2012 CMT Music Awards will air LIVE simultaneously on CMT stations and online, Wednesday June 6th at 8/7c!

CMT Awards 2012 Performers

First Round of 2012 CMT Awards Performers Announced The CMT Music Awards are quickly approaching (less than a month away!), and they are lining up the performances for the evening! So far, the line-up includes Carrie Underwood, Zac Brown Band, Kenny Chesney, Little Big Town, Brad Paisley and Lady Antebellum! This is pretty good news for the country music fans who can’t make it to CMA Fest this year! You can at least catch some good performances online or on TV! The show airs Wednesday, June 6th at 8pm! It’s fan voted, and you can vote all the way through June 4th! Now, last year if you remember, we had some odd guests (i.e. Justin Bieber and Ludacris) that had country music fans scratching their heads in confusion. Think we’ll have a similar situation this year? Leave your guesses in the comment section below!

The Band Perry Collaborates with Justin Bieber

The Band Perry Joins Bieber On His Upcoming Christmas Album. It is an epidemic. I am honestly considering calling the CDC (Center for Disease Control). Okay, maybe I’m being just a tad over dramatic here, but country music fans, we have a problem. The Band Perry is collaborating with Justin Bieber on his upcoming Christmas album. Now, maybe if this was the first time this had happened, I would be a little less irritated (or maybe not…). However, I am beginning to notice a trend, and I do not like where it is headed. We have not kept our opinions to ourselves on this topic, over here at the CMNB newsroom. I have discussed this whole Bieber and country music …thing… several times, and HaleighT sounded off on it in her video segment last week (check that out here.) Yet, we’ve really only talked about it in bits and pieces, so right now, I’m going to paint the big picture. So, let’s go over this one more time. Rascal Flatts started this when they collaborated with Justin Bieber on his single “That Should Be Me” released in February of 2011 on his Never Say Never album. Then this summer at the 2011 CMT Music Awards, Justin Bieber won the very first award of the evening for this collaboration. I would like to point out two things. First, this award was won by Justin Bieber not Rascal Flatts. Second, this is not a country song. It isn’t even trying to pretend to be a country song. Actually, this song is so not country, it makes Rascal Flatts sound like they are not country. Yet, there we were at the 2011 Country Music Television Awards watching Justin Bieber win the first award of the evening…for not country music. Then just a couple of weeks ago, Justin Bieber popped up at Taylor Swift’s concert in L.A., and they performed a song together. Did they perform one of Taylor’s songs? No, they performed Justin’s “Baby“. (Sidenote, Bieber collaborated with Ludacris on that song. If you remember, Ludacris performed “Dirt Road Anthem” with Jason Aldean at the close of the 2011 CMT Awards. I’m just sayin’.). Shortly after Taylor and Justin’s performance together, we got word that Taylor and Justin are actually recording an original song together. Now, Taylor is known for branching into other genres that are a little less than country oriented (Think The Story of Us, released as a single earlier this year, pretty much 100% Pop. You can kind of hear the banjo in the background, but only if you ignore the drums and electric guitar.) Also, it could be argued that Taylor and Justin already share a substantial fan base (i.e. 13 year-old girls). Still, did she really have to record with Justin Bieber? Are there no other options? Now, The Band Perry is on the Bieber train. That’s three country artists/groups in just under a year. All three collaborating with a teenage pop sensation. My question is: Why? And Continue reading The Band Perry Collaborates with Justin Bieber

Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina at CMA Fest

Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina Gain Experience and Perspective at CMA Music Festival. Recent American Idol winner, Scotty McCreery and runner-up, Lauren Alaina have hit the ground running with appearances and performances every other day last week during the CMA Music Festival in Nashville. The pair attended the 2011 CMT Music Awards where they had the chance to help bring attention to the devastation created by this Spring’s storms, the relief efforts being made by some country music stars, and specifically introduce Sugarland‘s performance. Additionally, the two had the career starting opportunity Friday during the CMA Music Festival to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. Lauren sang LeAnn Rimes’ “Blue” as well as her debut single “Like My Mother Does“, and Scotty performed his debut single, “I Love You This Big” and George Strait’s “Check Yes Or No“. Saturday night during the nightly concerts at LP Field both Scotty and Lauren were able to perform with their own idols. Scotty, of course, performed a duet with Josh Turner on “Your Man” while Lauren sang “Anyway” with Martina McBride. On top of all this, both of these new and rising stars learned just recently that both of their singles are fairing very well on the charts, proving just how much American loves them. So, not only are Scotty and Lauren getting to jump right in, presenting at awards shows, performing with the artists who inspire them, and gracing the iconic Opry stage, they are already proving their worth with success on their first singles. Regardless of these opportunities and successes however, they are aware of the need to establish an identity of their own. Lauren who has sited Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert as influences in addition to Martina McBride, recognizes the need to create original content, and set herself appear as a female country artist. “I got a record deal, at 16. That’s weird. Making this record is going to be the biggest step I’m ever going to have to do. People know who I am because of a TV show, but it’s from singing cover songs…I have to be different from everybody else.” -Lauren Alaina Scotty who garnered much of his attention on Idol because of his vocal similarity to Josh Turner openly acknowledges the similarity, but underscores his responsibility to present something fresh and different, understanding that it will take a lot of hard work. “I might sound like them, kind of, but it’ll be a different career. They’re older, well-established guys. There’s going to be a lot of work for me to get out of this and hit the ground running. I’m trying to put my foot in the door.” -Scotty McCreery With CMA Fest and their whirlwind schedule concluded, hopefully Scotty and Lauren will get a little breather The they can get started on those albums they’ve promised fans! CMT Music Award Performances!

CMT Music Award Performances Make The Night! Tonight was the night for the long awaited CMT Music Awards! Although I am happy for all the artists who received a buckle, I’m not happy with all of the results. But…life goes on, life isn’t fair, there is always next year, on to the next, and every other “keep your chin up” moto out there is running through my mind. So instead of giving my thoughts on the winners, I’ll give my thoughts on the major performances. Country stars had Nashville rocking and everyone else in America wishing we were there! It started off strong with Toby Keith and his latest single “Made In America“. This Oklahoma native has a tremendous amount of pride for his country and never fails to describe it in his lyrics! The Band Perry was next with the intro of “Love The Way You Lie” originally by Rihanna and then went straight into their latest hit “You Lie“. It was an energetic display with sister Kimberly traveling from the main stage, to a mini stage equipped with her piano, then back to the main stage. One of my favorite parts of the night was Luke Bryan singing “Country Girl (Shake It For ME)”. He looked like he was having the time of his life on stage dancing to his recent hit! This performance definitely brought up the level of excitement in the enormous room. Rascal Flatts was backed by a very talented choir as they sang “I Won’t Let Go“. It was touching and I was very impressed with their humble performance. For the first time in 3 years Big and Rich graced the stage with a little help from their favorite redneck woman, Gretchen Wilson. The three rocked the stage with “Fake ID“, a comical tale of a youngster looking for a good time! My all-time favorite part of the night by far was Sheryl Crow with host Kid Rock and their performance of “Collide“. These two always hit the ball out of the park when the team up, “Picture” is still a classic in my mind! Tonight the duo was both sincere and entertaining, ending the song with a slow dance. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, that is country music at its finest! Zac Brown Band kept it tropical and breezy with “Knee Deep“. Sugarland had an emotional performance with “Stand Up“, having two sisters from Joplin, Mo join them on stage to wave the “LOVE Flag”. Keith Urban shared with us “Long Hot Summer“, which is sure to be the next summer hit. Lady Antebellum gave us a surprise when they followed up their song “Just A Kiss” with “Kiss” by Prince. The extra something at the end was fun and livened up their whole performance! Probably the most shocking part of the night was Jason Aldean with Ludacris and their re-vamped version of “Dirt Road Anthem“. Aldean always impresses me with his “rapping” abilities and having the rap star Continue reading CMT Music Award Performances!
