Women In Country Music

Guest Post: Women In Country Music – Where Is Our Place? Historically, women have been ignored when charting the people and events of country music’s illustrative past. This has occurred both in the story of the music and of the industry respectively, yet women have often been seen as fans near-equally to men; the bored and lonely housewife who finds solace in the country music emanating from her kitchen radio. The women who are not socially permitted to reside in the classic Honky-Tonk, unless they want to be perceived as promiscuous, good-time women. Artist-wise they were the ‘girl singer’, the ‘pretty face’, generally marketed as more country pop, for commercial gain, their ‘repressed sex appeal’ being exploited. And they did not belong in the industry, as this was far too complicated for them. This is the general collective memory of women’s contributions to country music up until the 1960s/1970s, and often it’s simply not accurate at all. The scene was in abundance of Honky-Tonk singing women, female musicians, feisty souls who were pioneers in their field for saying what the ordinary women were desperate to speak out about. Patsy Cline has often been seen as revolutionary, but in comparison to these ladies of the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, she was one of the first ladies of the Nashville Sound, designed to sell records with smooth arrangements and submissive to the patriarchal industry. Industry-wise it has been noted that very few women worked at record labels or similar establishments; however Jo Walker was the executive director of the CMA since 1962 (soon after its inception in the late 1950s) until 1991. This is significant because this period of time was arguably the most prosperous for the CMA and for country music commercially, nationally and globally. Through extensive promotional campaigns, fundraising events and construction of the Country Music Hall Of Fame & Museum, CMA Awards, Country Music Foundation, and Fan Fair (among others), I would argue that she has been one of the most important and influential people ever to grace country music in any way, shape or form. Way to take one for the girls, huh? But her contributions are much-documented, admittedly. However, something that is often ignored is the role of women in country music fan clubs during the 1950s. Before the genre really invested in professional PR and fan clubs, they were set up by fans, run by fans, and were a vital promotional tool for the artists. And the best part? About 95% of the people fronting and organising these were women. They would disseminate regular publications (quarterly, monthly, etc) with updates about the artist, whilst also promoting other similar artists and those new and up-and-coming. They would encourage the fans they were reaching to spread the word of country music, to phone up radio stations and request that artist’s song, and would consult with the artist themselves as a PR partnership. There would be so much work that these women, often housewives and mothers looking for a Continue reading Women In Country Music

2012 CMA Awards Live Recap

MissMolly’s Run Down of the 2012 CMA Awards Live! Like most country music fans, I typically snuggle up to my couch to watch the CMA Awards! Well, this year, I had the chance to get up close and personal with the 2012 CMA Awards and experience the show live from the Bridgestone Arena. I had a really great seat with a really great view (I wasn’t close enough to touch anyone, but there’s always next year!!), and I gotta tell you that the television just doesn’t do this amazing show justice! I’ve heard a lot of reports via Twitter and Facebook from other country music fans expressing disappointment in sound quality and the performances. I’m super bummed to hear those sorts of things because it was a terrific live show! So, I want to give y’all a peak into the live experience and share with you my top moments from the night that probably didn’t translate or maybe weren’t shown at all! Country Chat: Share your thoughts below! What did you think of the show? What were your favorite moments? MissMolly’s 2012 CMA Awards Live Top Moments! 1. Feel the Heat! Zac Brown tweeted it and I totally agree, but we don’t think that the badassery of the Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Eric Church opening performance was fully expressed through the television screen. Seriously, when those flames went up on the back of the stage, I could feel the heat, and honestly, it startled me a bit. Jason, Luke, and Eric are a phenomenal combo, and I have a whole new appreciation for that song now (“The Only Way I Know” off his Night Train album). 2. Miranda Lambert’s Performance. As you probably know, Miranda won Female Vocalist of the Year, and she really proved her worth in her performance last night. It what was one of the best outfits of the night, she was some kind of spitfire on stage! Running around, jumping, dancing, she was full of energy, and that energy could be felt in the crowd. I’ve seen Lambert perform live before, and there really is just something about her, and last night, she was on the top of her game and more! 3. Reba McEntire’s Yesteryear CMA Performance Clip. Now this is one thing I know for sure that television audiences don’t have the chance to enjoy, but during the commercial breaks clips from CMA Awards performances from the 80’s and 90’s (and I think a couple from the 70’s?) would play! The absolute best moment was when they showed a clip of Reba. During the commercial breaks the audience would typically get up and mill about, but when this clip was playing everyone was watching and clapping and cheering! It was made even more special considering that Reba was in the room with us sitting on the front row!! 4. The Acceptance Speeches! I didn’t realize until last night just how tight knit the country music community really is! There is such a camaraderie and Continue reading 2012 CMA Awards Live Recap

The Band Perry New Single “Better Dig Two” Available

The Band Perry’s New Single “Better Dig Two” Released This Week! Even though they haven’t released a new album in two years, The Band Perry is still working on creating more great hits for their fans. Their latest single (available now on iTunes) uses dark humor to express a lady’s love of her man. For now, we don’t have a definite release date or name for The Band Perry’s next album. They’ve announced it will be available next year, but that’s really the only info we have except for this great new song! “Better Dig Two” Lyrics I told you on the day we wed I was gonna love you ’til I’s dead Made you wait ’til our wedding night That’s the first and the last time I wear white So if the ties that bind ever do come loose Tie them in a knot like a hangman’s noose Cause I’ll go to heaven or I’ll go to hell Before I’ll see you with someone else Put me in the ground Put me six foot down And let the stone say: Here lies the girl whose only crutch Was loving one man just a little too much If you go before I do I’m gonna tell the gravedigger that he better dig two Well, It won’t be whiskey, won’t be meth It’ll be your name on my last breath If divorce or death ever do us part The coroner will call it a broken heart So put me in the ground Put me six foot down And let the stone say: Here lies the girl whose only crutch Was loving one man just a little too much If you go before I do I’m gonna tell the gravedigger that he better dig two Dig two Ooh, ooh I took your name when I took those vows I meant ’em back then and I mean ’em right now, Oh, right now If the ties that bind ever do come loose If forever ever ends for you If that ring gets a little too tight You might as well read me my last rights And let the stone say: Here lies the girl whose only crutch Was loving one man just a little too much If you go before I do Gonna tell the gravedigger that he better dig, uh! Heavy stone right next to mine, We’ll be together ’til the end of time Don’t you go before I do, I’m gonna tell the gravedigger that he better dig two I told you on the day we wed I was gonna love you ’til I’s dead

Top 5 Scary Country Music Songs

The Top 5 Country Songs That Will Have You Creeped Out! Being a fan of country music my whole life, I have grown up and so has my take on lyrics. There are many songs that I would sing word for word as a child and not have a clue what was going on. For example, Garth Brooks’ “Two Of A Kind, Workin’ On A Full House” was a favorite of mine, but in the early 90s I had no clue the song talks about hands of cards. Back then, the only thing that came to mind when full house was said was Uncle Jesse and Michelle… Luckily now, I do understand the majority of the songs I listen to. But one thing that hasn’t changed is the fact that some songs still creep me out! I would hate when certain songs would come on the radio when I would be in the car with my mom at night. They flat out scared me! Below is the list, in my opinion, of the Top 5 scariest songs in country music. Happy Halloween! Top 5 Scary Songs: 1. The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia – Reba McEntire 2. Beaches Of Cheyenne – Garth Brooks 3. Midnight In Montgomery – Alan Jackson 4. The Ride – David Allan Coe 5. The Thunder Rolls – Garth Brooks Apparently Garth confused and scared me as a child…
